Dutch time trialist Wilfried Arends crowned an exciting debut season with a hard fought silver medal at the World Championships ITT (U23) in Spain.
Over a grueling 201km course that took no prisoners, Arends set a time that was only beaten by Dani Maldarasanu from Skudehavnen CC. The Moldovan rider is not usually considered a time trial specialist but was in top form and set a blistering pace that nobody could match on the day.
Arends had spent much of the day on the hot seat after setting the early benchmark but had to give way after Maldarasanu's dominant ride.
The 21-year-old was visibly disappointed at the finish line, but vowed to return stronger the very next year.
